On Thursday, May 31, the Public Affairs office arranged for 18 students from Taylor’s University School of Communication and their lecturer Siow Yuen Ching to go aboard the USS John Paul Jones. Combat System Officer Lt. Hugo Lima and Strike Officer Ensign Scott Babcock each led a group of nine students on a tour on the ship and answered their questions. The third Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer sailed from Bahrain was docked in Port Klang for three days. Its next destination will be Hong Kong before heading back to the U.S.
Crew members on the ship shared their different roles and responsibilities and explained the advanced systems and equipment installed on the ship to the students. The students also learned about these sailors’ experiences during their eight-month deployment. USS John Paul Jones was among the most sophisticated and capable warships first assigned to the pacific coast. Students were required to submit an essay on their ship-visit experience within 24 hours, and the U.S. Embassy would award the two best written essays.
