Senators McCain and Lieberman Speak To Malaysian Press

On May 31, U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur arranged a press conference for U.S. Congressional delegation Senators John McCain and Joseph Lieberman. The Senators gave brief presentations and answered questions from media. The topics includes free enterprise, freedom and democracy, China in relation to the South China Sea, Syria, regional stability, freedom of the seas, strengthening military ties and political commitment in Asia, etc. During their two-day stay, the Senators met with Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak and high-level members of his staff, including Foreign Minister Anifah Aman. 

The Senators’ visit has generated great interest in the Malaysian media and among the Malaysian public. The visit was covered extensively by the local and foreign media. News stories in both the print and television media were given prominence on the front page or as lead items. Emphasis was given to the important bilateral issues discussed with Prime Minister Najib Razak, and highlighted the excellent relations between the U.S. and Malaysia.
