On Wednesday, September 5, U.S. Ambassador Paul W. Jones and Assistant Minister of Tourism in Sarawak YB Datuk Haji Talib Zulpilip jointly launched the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Peace Corps in Malaysia at the Sarawak State Library in Kuching. The program is made possible by Lincoln Corner Sarawak, a partnership between the U.S. Embassy and the Sarawak State Library that provides thousands of American books, magazines, DVDs, iPads, Kindles and more to the Sarawakian public. Former Peace Corps Volunteers Rich Harvey, Bill Hughes, and Gary McMurray attended the event, along with many other Malaysians who recalled fond memories of Peace Corps Volunteers in their communities.
The Peace Corps came to Malaysia between 1962 and 1983, sending more than four thousand volunteers to work side by side with Malaysians in fields of education, agriculture, health, and more. Many volunteers’ lives became deeply intertwined with their adopted Malaysian communities, and the Peace Corps Anniversary Exhibit celebrates these wonderful lifelong relationships across Malaysia.
