On June 15, 2010, the U.S. Embassy, Malaysian American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) and the Penang State Library signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to open a Lincoln Corner and MACEE Office in Penang.  The ceremony was held in the Georgetown Branch of the Penang Library.  The Embassy’s Counselor for Public Affairs Marrie Schaefer, MACEE Executive Director Dr. James Coffman, and Y.B. Professor P. Ramasamy, Deputy Chief Minister II and Chairman of the Library Board, signed a Memorandum of Understanding reflecting the U.S.-Malaysia partnership in the Lincoln Corner project in Penang.  Witnessing the signing ceremony was Y.A.B. Mr. Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang.

The Lincoln Corner and MACEE Office are located in the Main Library in Seberang Jaya, with a satellite facility in the Georgetown Branch.  At the Lincoln Corner, the people of Penang will have access to high quality American library materials, including books, periodicals, electronic databases, DVDs, and videos, as well as reference and referral services on all aspects of the United States of America.  In addition, it will offer a video conferencing facility and monthly library activities such as story-telling, movie screenings and public lectures. The MOU also provided facilities for MACEE to re-open its education advising office in Penang to cater to the increasing number of Malaysians in the northern region who are planning to study in the U.S.

This is the seventh Lincoln Corner and second MACEE Office in Malaysia.  It is now open to the public and is expected to be fully operational in the latter part of 2010.
