US Interagency Delegation Discusses UN Resolution on North Korea with Malaysian Officials

Ambassador Philip Goldberg, the U.S. co-ordinator for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1874, led a U.S. delegation to Malaysia and China from July 2-6, 2009.  Ambassador Philip S. Goldberg, spoke with Malaysian and international media on the evening of Monday, July 6, after a day of discussions with senior Malaysian government officials during a one-day visit to Kuala Lumpur.  Goldberg and his interagency delegation met with officials of the Ministry of Finance, Bank Negara and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

U.N. Security Council Resolution 1874 bans the export of all weapons by North Korea.  The resolution also bans all financial transactions with North Korea that could contribute to its nuclear or ballistic missile programs.  Ambassador Goldberg explained to press in Kuala Lumpur that his trip to Malaysia highlighted the growing partnership between the United States and Malaysia which includes non-proliferation issues.  “Malaysia plays an important role in the region, in ASEAN, and we very much wanted to touch base with an ASEAN country to discuss the way forward in this part of Asia,” he said.

Ambassador Goldberg added that another aspect of his visit was to tap into Malaysia’s expertise and experience in the financial sector so as to use this knowledge to help the international community, within the UN, move forward in implementing the UN resolution.
