Embassy KL Donates 132 Kindle E-Readers to the Access Microscholarship Program
On Tuesday, May 15, Counselor for Public Affairs Scott Rauland donated 132 units of Amazon Kindle e-readers to the ELS Language Center at a soft launch in Subang Jaya. Under a new partnership between the U.S. Department of State and Amazon.com, Kindle e-readers are distributed across the globe to enhance English education for students under the English Access Microscholarship Program.
This cutting-edge technology is intended to facilitate Access Program teachers in their classroom activities in order to create an interactive and fun learning environment for their students. The Kindles are loaded with 57 pieces of English language content including bestselling books, journals and word puzzles.
At the launch, Mr. Rauland challenged the Access students to a ‘Thread Word’ game that was pre-loaded on the Kindles. The 50 students were divided into 16 groups and were given five minutes to form as many words as possible with the letters provided. A group of three boys prevailed as champions with a score of 1,120 and were awarded for their courageous effort in handling a Kindle and tackling the word game for the first time.
The Kindles will be also distributed to the English Access Microscholarship students at the ELS Centers in Penang and Johor.
Also present at the event were ELS Vice President of Operations Mr. Robert Brander, ELS Director of University Partner Relations and Special Programs Mr. Douglas Fraser, and ACCESS Microscholarship Program teachers and students.
