Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail, and Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, Marrie Schaefer, Attend the Closing Ceremony of DEA Chemical Diversion and Clandestine Laboratory Seminar at the Royal Malaysia Police College in Kuala Lumpur

On July 17, 2009, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Ismail bin Haji Omar, Royal Malaysia Police, and honorary guest, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, Marrie Schaefer, officiated at the closing ceremony of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Chemical Diversion and Clandestine Laboratory seminar held at the Royal Malaysia Police College from July 13-17, 2009.   An International Training Team composed of DEA Agents, Diversion Investigators, and Forensic Chemists traveled to Malaysia to conduct this seminar with officers of the Royal Malaysia Police and officials of the Malaysian Ministry of Health, Pharmaceutical Enforcement Division. This seminar involved extensive information exchanges on the international diversion of licit drugs, and trafficking of pre-cursor chemicals used to manufacture illicit drugs.   DEA Agents and Chemists also provided an introductory course on the dangers of clandestine methamphetamine laboratories.  

 

ADCM Schaefer’s remarks at the closing ceremony underscored the excellent cooperation between Malaysian and U.S. counter-narcotics officials.  She also reiterated the importance of the U.S.-Malaysia Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty, and the need for continued information sharing and cooperation to combat the production and distribution of methamphetamine (Syabu).
