THE WHITE HOUSE ANNOUNCES ITS INTENTION TO NOMINATE NEW U.S. AMBASSADOR TO MALAYSIA

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate Christopher J. LaFleur, of New York, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Malaysia.

A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, Mr. LaFleur currently serves as the Cyrus Vance Fellow in Diplomatic Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.   Mr. LaFleur joined the State Department in 1973 and served in U.S. Embassies in Japan and France, at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and with the American Institute in Taiwan.

At the State Department, he worked on normalization of relations with Vietnam and the Cambodia Peace Accords as Director for Indochina (1991-93) and on policy toward Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for East Asia and Pacific Affairs (2001-2003).  Since early 2003, he has represented the State Department in discussions with Japan and South Korea on the future of our alliances. He earned his bachelor's degree from Oberlin College.

Mr. LaFleur’s nomination is now pending Senate confirmation, which is likely to occur later this year.
