President Bush's Historic Trip as First U.S. President to Visit Mongolia
President Bush and Mongolia's President Nambaryn Enkhbayar reaffirmed the longstanding friendship
between the United States and Mongolia and pledged continued support for increased bilateral ties,
according to a November 21 joint statement.
Bush is the first sitting U.S. president to visit Mongolia. His visit to Ulaanbaatar concluded a
weeklong trip to Asia that also included Japan, South Korea and China.
In the joint statement, Bush welcomed Mongolia's democratic progress and congratulated the
country on qualifying for eligibility for the United States' Millennium Challenge Account aid program. He
also thanked Mongolia for its financial assistance for the U.S. victims of Hurricane Katrina and for its
participation in reconstruction operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Bush and Enkhbayar also agreed to
work together to facilitate Mongolia's participation in regional and international political, economic
and financial structures.
