Malaysian Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil greets U.S. Ambassador Christopher J. La Fleur to mark American Independence Day celebrations at the J.W. Marriott Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, July 5th.

U.S. EMBASSY KUALA LUMPUR CELEBRATES AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY WITH OVER 900 MALAYSIANS AND OTHER VIPs ON JULY 5TH


At a gala reception held on the evening of July 5th, U.S. Ambassador Christopher J. LaFleur and other Embassy officials and staff celebrated U.S. Independence Day with Malaysian Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and over 900 Malaysians and others at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The evening's festivities began with the Star Spangled Banner (U.S. National Anthem) played by the U.S. Navy’s Seventh Fleet Band. Ambassador La Fleur then proposed a toast to His Majesty the Yang di Pertuan Agong. Janet Lee, an accomplished Malaysian singer, sang the Negara-ku (Malaysian National Anthem) accompanied by the band. Datuk Shahrizat responded with a toast to the President of the United States of America. The U.S. Marine Detachment in Kuala Lumpur provided a Color Guard for the ceremonies.

Ambassador LaFleur then invited guests to enjoy a gala buffet dinner featuring traditional American foods, including U.S. beef specially brought in for the event. Guests also viewed a photo exhibit depicting significant milestones commemorating 50 years of shared values and friendship between the United States and Malaysia. 

American Independence Day is a treasured holiday in the United States. More
