Americans Celebrate Asian Tradition of Dueling Kites
Dozens of brightly colored kites glided through the skies around the National Mall in Washington
March 25 performing aerobatics and engaging in aerial combat as part of the Smithsonian Institution's
40th Annual Kite Festival.
The festival, which was founded by aviation pioneer Paul E. Garber, includes a kite-making
competition and an exhibition of trick kite flying. Arguably the most exciting portion of the festival,
however, is the Rokkaku Battle, an event in which individuals and teams compete to cut the strings of
opposing kites ("cut") or knock them to the ground ("ground"). The last kite remaining at the end of
the contest is the winner.
