Embassy Officers Discuss New Directions in the Obama Administration
April 15 Counselor for Political Affairs Mr. Mark Clark and Public Diplomacy Officer Ms. Cody Taylor participated in a roundtable discussion organized by the Institute for Research in Youth Development, a research body for the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Sharing Perspectives on US Malaysia Relations
April 14 Ambassador Keith was invited to speak at a recent weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Petaling Jaya, on the topic of “Perspectives on US-Malaysia Relations.” Following his presentation, many questions were asked, and views exchanged, particularly on the topics of the global economic crisis and changes in Malaysia’s political leadership.

Embassy Hosts U.S. Nobel Prize Winner
April 9 The US Embassy hosted a dinner for Nobel Laureate Professor George F. Smoot on April 9 at the Residence of Ambassador and Mrs. Keith. Professor Smoot was visiting Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the BRIDGES program sponsored by the International Peace Foundation.

Seven Malaysian Undergraduates to Examine U.S., Global Environmental Challenges
April 2 Seven Malaysian undergraduate students from various universities, including Universiti Malaysia Trengganu, Universiti Teknology Malaysia Johor, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and Universiti Sains Malaysia Penang have been selected to participate in a special program at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii.

English Scholarship Program at the International School of Kuala Lumpur
March 24 English-language programs serve a vital function in connecting the United States with other countries. English-language classes promote cross-cultural understanding, engender an awareness of common ground, open up educational and research opportunities and empower students to participate in the global economy.

Reclaiming the Forest: Volunteers Gather to Plant Trees on World Forestry Day
March 21 Over 500 people showed up to plant trees in a peat bog in the Raja Musa Peat Swamp Forest in Selangor on Saturday, March 21. The U.S. Department of State supported the event with a grant to the Global Environment Centre which enabled it to launch this forest conservation effort with its partners, the Selangor Forest Department, etc.

Excellent Teamwork and Newfound Friendships in the "Land Below the Wind"
March 16 On March 16th, about 100 secondary school students in Kota Kinabalu participated in a one-day English camp at the Lincoln Corner of the State Public Library in Sabah. The students honed their English language skills and competed for prizes in a full day of interactive and team-based sessions focused on American idioms, folksongs, etc.

Exciting Research Projects Shared at Conference for American Fulbright Scholars
March 2009 An enthusiastic group of American Fulbright Scholars gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the first ever mid-year conference in Southeast Asia. The conference, on the theme of “Southeast Asia Today: Politics, Culture and Society,” was held March 12 – 15, 2009 and featured presentations by the scholars themselves.

U.S. Supports Judicial Workshop on Protecting Asean Wildlife
 The Asean Wildlife Enforcement Network (Asean WEN) and the Federal Courts of Malaysia recently organized a national judiciary workshop on wildlife crime and prosecution. The workshop ran from March 3-4, 2009 in Kuala Lumpur. Charge d’affaires Robert Rapson gave remarks at the opening ceremony.

February 24 A hundred 16-year old students and four teachers from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Muda, Kuala Lumpur participated in a one-day interactive English Camp organized by the American Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. February 13 20 Sailors from USS New Orleans (LPD 18) used their free time and energy to carry out community service work at the Children’s Protection Society (CPS) in Penang. Organized with help from the Rotary Club of Penang, the crew members cut and cleared trees, scraped and painted wood and cement structures and fixed plumbing and electrical equipment.

January 14 On Wednesday, January 14, the English Access Microscholarship Program was launched at an Islamic school in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. This exciting two-year Program will offer more than 60 students the opportunity to improve their written and spoken English. The students will also take field trips to visit libraries and universities in Kuala Lumpur.

January 12 On Monday evening, January 12th, Public Affairs hosted a farewell pizza party for the 40 outbound Malaysian Youth Exchange Study (YES) students who were leaving for the US. The YES program, which is funded by the Dept. of State, enables 40 Malaysian high school graduates each year to go to the US, live with families, and attend local high schools.
